How the Program Works

Currently, Thunder Bay residents have three options for receiving a boulevard tree.

  1. You can pay for the full cost of a newly planted tree now and have it planted during the current planting season (spring or fall) upon approval from the City Forester.
  2. You can choose to wait for the City to pay the full cost of the tree (the waiting period is 2 years). Or
  3. You can participate in the Tree Stewardship Program, which is a cost-shared accelerated tree planting program that will have a large-caliper tree planted on your public boulevard within the next planting season at 1/3 the full cost.

Cost of New Trees:

Under the Tree Stewardship Program, the cost of new trees would be shared in approximately three equal portions between:

  • the party requesting the tree(s) (usually a homeowner)
  • the Municipality
  • a pool of funds derived from donations, sponsorships and grants from Governments, businesses and corporations

Tax receipts are issued to individuals who requested the trees as well as to sponsors/donors who contributed to the program.
